You tell them once , you tell them a thousand times
I am just like my dad , i hear his words he use to shout at me coming out my mouth its frightening, but here is the worrying part, your parents was always right,
At home we have a combi boiler and yes it works just fine , turn the hot tap on and up she fires a few seconds later hot water is flowing out the tap,
Now here lies the problem,
Everyone coming into the house except me walks into the kitchen or bathroom just to rinse there hands and yes the boiler fires up, next minute the tap is off after a few seconds but the boiler is still running and RUNNING AND STILL RUNNING,
Its costing me money this is i shout, and all for to wet there hands in cold water, use the cold tap i shout, but its cold they say, well is the water you using hot NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,
I can see my dad in me in more ways then i ever thought, GRUMPY OLD MAN OR WHAT ,
Wait until they have there own house and bills i shall run there taps for ever

I only use the hot tap when washing the dishes.
Also, on my (2 year-old) boiler, there is a setting that turns off the 'pre-heated' (for instant hot water) setting.
You will also save in your situation by turning down the hot water temperature for the tap.
For smaller households (one or two people), have a water meter installed. It's free.
You will then only pay for what you use.

Talking of combi~boilers ... I had one fitted about 10 years ago. And, it works well~enough too - for the most part, - but, in summer (when the water *temperature doesn't really need to be all that hot) it usually tends to be *scalding!
Whereas, at this time of year ... ... it has a habit of being little more than lukewarm.

Arthur, you may be able to get your boiler upgraded free of charge now... through the govt. energy efficiency schemes, if it falls below certain standards (usually needs to be less than 87% 'efficient').
A newer one should also have separate controls for taps and radiator temps.
Take a look here for independent free advice Arthur:

Does this scheme work in England too?
I am in Sheltered Housing but the heating/hot water system is very expensive to run.

Yes Mick, there are various schemes in all areas... both for owners and tenants.
Energy Savings Trust website for full details.
Your local council should also have information and advice.
Pensioners and anyone on qualifying benefits are treated as priority cases.
Power companies run them too. You do NOT need to be with any particular power company to have work done (free) by them.
I have worked on these schemes since 2003.

Thanks for the rep Mick.
Don't give up on these free schemes. They're introducing new ones all the time.
