    Where in the world?

I'm confused. So what is the defnition of Asian?
We think of our Filipinas as being Asian don't we? Even though they come from a group of islands somewhere north of Australia.
If you were to browse porn websites, the definition of Asian is no doubt mainly "oriental" looking girls.
The BBC seem to define Asian as being Indian/Pakistani/ Bangladeshi. I don't see much OPM being played on Asian Network though!
Surely the biggest part of the continent of Asia is Russia, but hey- they were in the Eurovision song contest on Saturday night. So they're in Europe now are they? And isn't Turkey in Asia? or is it the Middle East? Well Israel is definately in the Middle East and not Europe isn't it.

So, the map of the world is- Only India and Pakistan are in Asia and everyone else is European. So The Philippines must be Indian or are they really European too?

Perhaps the early 70s ideal of a global melting pot of people is becoming a reality.
I know being British is a dirty word now as it's racist isn't it?
Perhaps only the Africans really know who they are, except the white ones who are really confused.
Well, at least we're contributing to global harmony and the mixing of the blood with our multi-cultural offspring.
Our children will however, have no idea what to put when application forms ask for "Ethnic background". Does anyone know any more?

    Interesting post

I think your point is only revealing how we are taught to divide and label every thing, personally I think there are just people with diverse views (mostly taught) and the most interesting ones are those that understand that and are in there own process of dismantling these projections.

The closed mind is not very useful to understandin our lives or the lives of others

It’s funny you raise this now as we were pondering this recently as we were reclassifying our non-American operations. Many people think of the Indian sub-continent as being Asia and South Asia being synonymous and made up of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives and Pakistan

    South-East Asia
Generally, it appears to be accepted that Brunei, Cambodia (Kampuchea), Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Sarawak, Singapore, Sumatra, Thailand and Vietnam constitute South-East Asia.

    Asia Minor
Seems to be a peninsula in South-Western Asia that forms the Asian part of Turkey. Turkey has both Asian and European sides depending on which side of the Bosphorus you are on.

    Far East
Far East in its commonest use equates to terms such as the Orient, which apparently means East. South East Asia and the Russian Far East and Mongolia (might now be included in the Far East to some extent due to recent Chinese migration to Russia, and the Korean Diaspora in Russia.

East Asia also known as North Asia
As far as I can determine, the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Taiwan,
Japan , North Korea and South Korea constitute East Asia.

Summary - its complicated. And I also think that rather than celebrating the beauty of variety, labelling and classifying based on heterogeneity is often to cause close minds and thus segregation and discrimination.

A great shame as variety in life is a blessing!

It's a shame that Britishness has become defiled. In the US, citizens of all origins can be seen displaying the Spangled Banner outside their homes; not in the UK unless they want to be badly labelled.
Be responsible with little so that you can be trusted with much!!

When asked for my ethnic backgound, I put Other - Cornish

What do I put for my daughter? Her mother was South African, her family has been there for generations. But she was Indian. Though she is not Indian, because she was South African. Neither was she Asian, as Africa is not in Asia (much to the surprise of some people).

So if I put she is white and South African, that will tell them nothing, as what is South African? They have 13 official languages.

I think in future I will put Other - human

It's all a load of bull, between the PC brigade and the target meeting box tickers, they have made a right mess of it.

The PC brigade say we must talk of a chalk-board, not a black-board. Why then are we allowed to speak of a white-board?
Many councils in the UK have a black workers forum, can you imagine the row if you had a white workers forum?

If people could just be left to get on with each other, and respect each other as people, not as a classification of person, things would be a lot better.

In the 1960s, Redd Foxx, a black American comedian summed it up. Two of his lines were:-

"I don't care what colour you are, come nuclear war, we'll all be black - - - and crisp"

"It doesn't matter what colour you are, when you get to bed and turn the light off, it becomes a question of who bathed"

Where we come from, and whatever our background doesn't matter, it is our attitudes towards all others that matters.

    You make a good point.

If people could just be left to get on with each other, and respect each other as people, not as a classification of person, things would be a lot better.
If only. I really feel that if people only travelled more they would recognise the beauty in the unfamiliar and the different.

Amen and amen. You got my vote. If only you were running.
