Whilst with the principle ... ... I find it hard to fathom WHY couples who've cohabited for many years don't simply "tie the knot" - especially when they've produced kids - as, in the event of one of the partners dying, it would surely save a lot of legal hassle for the survivors at an extremely emotional time.
