The Guardian newspaper has unearthed that migrant workers are being used as cheap labour on board some Irish trawlers.
Seems largely a mix of Ghanaian, Filipino, Egyptian and Indian being used under a UK loophole

Funny this came up as a mate has just been offered a job in ireland on a trawler,he was told "Dont worry, you wont be on the deck, thats what the filipinos are for,you can have an easy job operating the winch" and he was offered twice the cash they are on,go to the north eastbof england, quite a few pinoys working the boats, average is £200 a week, they cant complain though as how many pinoy fishermen working as deck hands arbon 14,000 peso a week?
Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.

Have the Guardian just realised that Filipinos are widely used throughout the world as cheap, bordering on the slave labour ?
The world's merchant shipping would drift to a halt without the more skilled ones, nevermind a few trawlers.
If the workers are happy ...

Most fishermen in the UK work on a share basis, no fish no money. And if you have a useless skipper. Big ships pay a small wage and bonus on the amount of fish caught. So dont listen to all these stories about being under paid.
25 years in the industry so I know what im talking about.

I was in commission-only sales for years... and made loads of money.
Of course to those who couldn't do the job, it was awful and didn't pay.
