Talking Scots Ebola Nurse In 'Serious Condition'

Scots ebola nurse, Pauline Cafferkey ... who originally contracted the deadly infection in Sierra Leone last December ... has apparently been flown back to the isolation unit in London - where she spent 3 weeks - after fresh traces of the virus were rediscovered in her body, Greater Glasgow Health Board has announced.

I also feel the same about this case, all she wanted to do in the beginning was help others, I sincerely hope she does pull through!

Our thoughts are surely with Pauline Cafferkey and her family - she’s receiving some of the best care in the world at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Many other critically ill patients are also receiving best possible treatment under OUR NHS.

The medical team treating Ms Cafferkey is in " uncharted territory ". The Ebola virus may " hide " from immune defences in certain parts of the body ( just like other viruses such as that causing cold sores, and bacteria causing TB ) and therefore cause recurrence of symptoms. Clearly we don’t yet know how many of those who have apparently recovered ( over 17,000 out of at least 28,500 reported cases ) from Ebola infection will have such recurrence - thankfully so far it appears very rare.

All 58 close contacts are being monitored, and 25 have agreed to vaccination. The vaccine ( " rVSV-ZEBOV " ) is unlicensed. In fact there are now five vaccines being trialled. They all work in the same way - blocking the viral protein that binds Ebola to " host " ( patient ) cells. Continued trials are now difficult because ( fortunately ) the frequency of cases in the West African outbreak has fallen markedly. Of course another outbreak can’t be ruled out and funding support is needed to stockpile the best vaccine(s).

There is already a Forum thread on Ebola virus in this section ( http://filipinaroses.com/showthread....05-Ebola-Virus ).
