    Singapore Airlines jet plunges 4,000m

A SIA A330-300 with 194 people on board plummeted 4,000m while flying from Singapore to Shangai. 13000ft For the old folk!

During bad weather, both Rolls Royce engines stopped working, and the plane quickly dropped to below 20,000ft from its crusing altitude, before the pilots got the engines fired up again.

This sounds like they flamed out due to the amount of water they sucked in. This is not supposed to happen with the modern engine designs.

Considering what's happened in that part of the world lately involving the airline industry I would imagine that clean underwear for all on board was the order of the day once they landed.

Only ever experienced this before flying into Tampa, made everyone scream and lots of rubbish was on the floor once we landed, ok it was not as far as they fell but it was scary all the same

There are lots of airless pockets that cause aircraft to drop a few thousand feet. No airflow over the wings and no air for the engines.

When the engines stop at cruising altitude, the plane has about 30 minutes to land. It is usually only a problem when over the ocean. A number of passenger jets have landed with no engines working in the past without incident.
