I para, you know the old saying, "there are only 2 things that fall from the sky bird crap and ............. " I was in Aldershot yesterday, or as we now call it, Aldersh*t!

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.

I like what he said after receiving his VC, he didn't want to let the maroon machine down

L/Cpl Joshua Leakey has been awarded Britain’s highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy more than 70 years after a relative posthumously won the same medal
    Clearly runs in the blood.
    Very Brave man.

Generally no - can you give me firefighters lost in action compared to soldiers?

Soldiers don't strike, firemen do - putting lives at risk! No comparison.

Who sent him to fight ? The government !

Who's over the firemen, the government.

They don't have that right now, but maybe soon you'll be calling them, when they go on strike for increasing the risks to their lives because of cutbacks, lack of equipment and lack of rights.

European court strikes down France’s ban on soldiers’ trade unions
“A blanket ban on forming or joining a Trade Union encroaches on the very essence of this freedom,” the court ruled, while accepting that there could be “legitimate restrictions” on the right to strike or criticise military institutions in public.

The decision has implications for other European countries, such as the UK and Italy, who also forbid soldiers’ unions and for Portugal, where the right exists in theory but not in practice, according to Danish soldiers’ union leader, Flemming Vinther.

The Prime Minister said: “When you hear how events unfolded and the intensity of enemy fire, it is difficult to imagine how one wouldn't be frozen to the spot and yet L/Cpl Leakey risked his life to run across that barren hillside not just once, but multiple times, to turn the battle and save the lives of comrades.

“And that is why he deserves the highest honour for bravery the nation can give.”

What does he know about it? The closest he has been to a war is in the House of Commons and he is losing that one.

There were/are a lot of brave people out there. Not all put forward though. Some would argue that he was just doing his job and what he had been trained for.

He probably knows about as much as the rest of us, but described quite eloquently what most of us think.
Let's for once keep this thread on topic and not turn it into a political slanging match

Why involve politics in the first place? I was pointing out that there were a lot of brave soldiers out there to get a bravery medal you have to be put forward by the military hierachy first.

in principle, Andy ... but the House of Commons - especially during the run up to a General Election - can dissolve into a pretty good image of a battleground!
