Based on what you've posted they should both have been issued with a visa valid for 33 months ?

They will be eligible for FLR(M) after 30 months living in UK
Application may be made 28 days before the 30 month anniversay at the earliest and by visa expiry at the latest.

The next visa will be valid for a further 30 months.

    Not at all.
The very earliest to apply is 28 days before the 30 month anniversay and obviously the very latest to apply is the day of visa expiry.
Applications should be made in that 'window' or timeframe.

If you apply too early you'll find the visa expires before the residency requirement for ILR and then you'll need to apply and pay for an additional FLR visa which is completely unecessary (and expensive)
