Building material
Once you have built your place out of breeze block and you want to put a nice finish on it - the outside, I mean - what do you use?
Do you use render or another thing?
This is going to be the second floor, and I am looking at wood rather then just plain render. Any ideas?

Render painted with Sandtex, not wood because of termites!

Render or tile cladding. Don,t use wood - termites get into everything. I,ve even found them behind my bathroom tiles, damn nuisance!

I had to replace 90% of our roofing struts after just 4 years, but I blame the builders for not treating the ground first....

If you want your house to last any length of time, use as little wood as possible. I will be using steel roof trusts on mine for sure after seeing first hand what damage these little buggers can do.

Just guessing here, but how about Aluminium, or lightweight stone panels or how about bamboo as an alternative to wood?

We have the same stuff on our nipa house..Termites dont touch it as it`s only the tough shell of the bamboo that has been skimmed off and then weaved into a diamond pattern.
Only thing is that you need to attach 2x2 stud work onto blocks that it will be nailed too..
Any timber here needs to be coated by a product called woodsaver to completely stop termites.
In actual fact its cheaper to cement render walls but it just depends on what look you are after..
