Can’t smell these things? You may have just five years left to live

Losing your sense of smell could be an early warning sign of death, scientists have said today.

In a long-term study of 3,000 adults between the ages of 57 and 85 at the University of Chicago, researchers asked participants if they could identify five different odours.

Adults were asked if they recognise peppermint, fish, orange, rose and leather. The 39 per cent with the worst olfactory function – smell recognition – were all dead within five years.

, Jamie ... but those findings are a load of hogwash, IMO. Having lost my own olfactory senses in the mid 1980s, the cause was traced to the growth of benign nasal polyps ... ... which, when surgically removed, led to my sense of smell returning - stronger than it'd ever been - and I ain't dead yet!

Having a stronger sense of smell does have its disadvantages though, Arthur, especially when there's dried fish on the menu lol.

My sense of smell is very good. It's my eyesight that lets me down which brings me to a joke I've just remembered.

A Polish guy goes to the optician and is asked to read the bottom line of letters.

    C Z W C Z Y K

"Are you able to read them?" asked the optician

"Read them?" Replied the Pole, "I know the guy!"
