Natural Disaster Risks in the Philippines

The Philippines is one of the most danger prone countries in the world when it comes to disasters.The.Philippines.has suffered from an unfathomable number of deadly earthquakes, typhoons, floods, drought, volcano eruptions and other natural disasters. And these have caused massive devastations that lead to enormous number of casualties. This is because of its location along a large Pacific Ocean region where many of the Earth’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. This region is called the Ring of Fire, and the typhoon belt.
TYPHOONS:
According to JTWC or the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, approximately eighty typhoons develop above tropical waters and nineteen of which enter the Philippines area of responsibility and six to nine of them make landfall. The Philippines is in fact the country that is most hit by and exposed to tropical storms since it is very near to the Pacific Ocean. Violent tropical storms such as the very latest one, having an international name called Haiyan typhoon, generated ten times as much energy as the Hiroshima atomic bomb. It left a big number of casualties in which six thousand eight hundred lives were lost from its storm surges and powerful winds. Over one thousand went missing, and nearly twenty thousand people were injured. The government agency called PAGASA or Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services are the ones responsible for monitoring the weather conditions, and the dissemination of updates regarding the weather of the Philippines.
EARTHQUAKES:
Earthquakes are formed when plates underneath the Earth’s surface move in different directions. It can cause too much destruction and can cause many numbers of casualties depending on its intensity and magnitude. In the Philippines, there are many fault lines where an earthquake can originate. The seven point two magnitude earthquake that recently hit the Central Visayas has been very traumatic to many Filipinos. Many infrastructures were destroyed, including the historic churches. So, when staying in the Philippines, you should be aware of those places that have fault lines, especially if you are planning to build a property in that area. The government agency called PHIVOLCS or Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology are the ones responsible in monitoring seismic activities in the Philippines that may cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They are the ones to rely on when it comes to updates and in the distribution of information regarding earthquakes.
