Filipino Community in Derby?
Hi there, My girlfriend has come over on a 6 month visa and we were wondering how big the Filipino community is in Derby and if there are ever any events or meet ups organised in the East Midlands.

Hi hornash, there's a few communities/organisations in the area.
As usual it's going to take some walking about to find contacts.
The used to be a Filipino sari-sari store in Derby city centre called Sarap Filipino Store at 71 Osmaston Road .....not sure if it's still there.
Also over 100 Filipinos working at the Royal Derby Hospital, so that could be a good place to scout out.
You could also search out the area around at St Benedict's Catholic School in Darley Abbey.
Might help :xxgrinning--00xx3

Sorry for off-topic, and I know it was years ago.....but we used to go down to London every weekend to Oriental City. Fabulous buffet lunch, loads of Asian grocery stores and a big Japanese supermarket....
We had some great times there.......anyone else remember Oriental City??
It was on the Edgware Road in Colindale.

Remember it well, think it's been knocked down and redeveloped now, but have a vague memory of part the the deal being that the shops and restaurants were being relocated else where
There's a massive WinYip chinese superstore on Staples corner, (right at the bottom of the M1) with a restaurant attached. Judging by the amount of orientals eating in there I suspect it to be good

Yep, knocked down years ago. None of the outlets relocated anywhere.
My wife's hairdresser was at Oriental City.
We used to shop regularly at Wing Yip.....it's a nice place, especially since the huge make-over some years ago. Very easy trip for us from M1 J15
That restaurant is just brilliant....a real Dim Sum gem of a place....that's why it's always jam-packed. Reasonable prices too.
Sadly not in Derby

About an hour from me, the thought of decent Dim Sum is making me hungry now
Maybe organise a Sunday lunch there in the not too distant future

cheers for the responses, we had a look for sarap ourselves and found the chinese supermarket round the corner, apparently there is a new filipino store opening in derby in a couple of months. We have seen a few filipino's at the local churches when we go to mass but not introduced ourselves yet.

Thanks Arthur.
We are living near the city centre now, but moving to the outskirts soon. Somewhere away from the traffic, sirens and noise
