Well, the mail twists the story somewhat. The tax payer did not pay for this cruise, it was a complimentary cruise provided by the cruise line to naval personnel involved in the Maritime Trade Operations Centre in Dubai (where piracy monitoring occurs). The centre also uses RNR commercial seafarers to assist in bridging the gap, because commercial and navy operations are vastly different. Although perhaps might have been better to send him on a BP tanker or Maersk Container ship. He covered all his own costs and flights.

Still a jolly though Ricky I realise we only have a couple of dozen ships nowadays but why not send these officers on attachment to other warships on anti piracy patrol or like you say to a merchant ship. If there's freebie cruises up for grabs put some deserving matelots on them.

Maybe Commander Dunn had just finished a heavy session in the Crows Nest Bar when he came out with this astute (pardon the submarine pun) comment - ‘He commented on how ships and submarines operate at a different medium and height"
