Driving in Dubai is very dependant on your attitude to driving. For instance driving alone the Sheikh Zayed Road which is 7 lanes across in places at 120km/h or more with cars swerving in and out, undertaking and suddenly coming to halt from 120km/h to 10km/h in seconds due to spoof traffic jams can be challenging. However, if you enjoy driving and have good spatial awareness it can be quite interesting. Severe parking and driving offences can be punished with immediate jail sentences (here in Oman, running a red light is 48 hours in jail and car impounded for a week, Dubai is harsher).
The Dubai Metro and Taxis are cheap and very convenient. For instance when we drive up to Dubai on a weekend, we will stay at a hotel near a metro station and catch the metro around.
It really depends on what you want to see you.
