Under a bizarre scheme to be launched today, checkout staff at Asda and the Co-op will be employed as ‘sympathetic listeners’ so those with poor English can brush up their language skills.

's nothing new where Asda's concerned. ... as far back as 1995/96, when I was employed as a CSA (Customer Service Assistant) at their Perth store, following early retiral from my "proper job" I wore a BIG lapel badge emblazoned (in bold lettering) with the words:

"Arthur
Happy To Help"

Which, of course, I was ... and still am ... albeit as a forum member - and seated in front of a computer screen - instead of the thankless task of standing for hours on end in the foyer of a bloody supermarket.
