London Hoop Fest 2013

A week of activities dedicated to the art of hoopla begins with free weekday workshops and builds up to a weekend celebration that takes in a circus hoop workshop with Craig the Incredible Hula Boy, Burly Hulagan Hoopla with Anna the Hulagan, Tracey Chin's experimental hoop dance workshop, a group Spin show, and of course lots of opportunities to show off your emerging or outstanding skills. Journey to Space

War Games

An exhibition exploring the history and role of warfare in play from 1800 to the present day. Some 100 objects will cover toy weapons, strategy games, fake guns, computer games and popular fighting action figures in a bid to shed light on how toys have helped recreate and represent war through the ages, and how their design mirrors the technology, uniform and weaponry of their time. Four sections will explore the influence of warfare on toys and play through themes of 'Playing at War', which looks at children re-enacting war; 'On the Battlefield', which offers a chronological overview of combat and its influence on toys; 'From Reality to Fantasy', which explores the way toys took make believe warfare beyond our world; and 'Secret Weapons' which reveals how toys have actually been used in warfare to train, comfort, heal and aid escape.

Sensational Butterflies

Most of the creatures in the Natural History Museum have been dead for a very, very long time. But here, in this humid tent on its lawn, you can see the most beautiful birth sequence in the natural world: a butterfly wriggling out of its chrysalis, pumping up its damp wings then taking flight and landing – if you're lucky – on you, instead of a flower.

Each year the Whitechapel Gallery invites a contemporary artist to create new work for the Chilldren's Art Commission. This year's artists are Simon and Tom Bloor. The duo present a new body of work developed from workshops carried out at Hermitage Primary School, Tower Hamlets, where small clay sculptures made by the artists were crushed by children, encouraging a sense of rebellion within the school.

Amazon Adventure

Designed to evoke the experience of a family voyage on the world's largest river, 'Amazon Adventure' incorporates plenty of interactive elements. Live tetras and stingrays are among the exhibits, while the simulated (but gentle) electric zap of an eel will give children the chance to discover more about the river's unusual creatures.

The London Dungeon

The new London Dungeon has all the ghastly gore and black comedy of the old Tooley Street attraction in a bigger and more high-tech package. In a jokey celebration of torture, death and disease, visitors can journey back in time to London's plague-ridden streets (rotting corpses, rats, vile boils and projectile vomiting all come as standard) and meet some of the city's unsavoury characters, from Guy Fawkes to demon barber Sweeney Todd. A cast of blood-splattered actors are joined by 'virtual' guests, such as Brian Blessed as Henry VIII, and as well as the 18 different shows and 'surprises' – which could see you on the run from 'Jack the Ripper' or getting lost in London's Victorian sewers – there are two rides to raise the adrenaline: a turbulent boat trip down the Thames towards execution, and a dark drop ride plunging three stories in the pitch black. Note that the London Dungeon is unsuitable for young or easily scared children.
