Her ‘balikbayan’ son has fallen for a bar girl
My husband and I have lived for decades abroad, where our three kids were all born, bred and educated in good universities. We made sure that they were never alienated from our home country.

I think if the letter sender is just a friend of that guy, it's easy to say to let him be. But it is very hard for the parents (much more to a mother I think) to just let him be like that when they know they are seeing their son's downfall. If you don't care of what's happening to you kids, and not try to put them in the right direction when he's clearly in the wrong path, then I think you are not being a good parent.

I thought the parents handled the situation well, and also that the answer given was well thought-out and helpful.
The son is a grown man, and hard as it may be, we have to let them follow their own path through life and respect the decisions that they take...except in the case of something life-threatening say, where we would really be justified in intervening.
The last thing I would want is to push my chldren away from me.

I know lots of guys who have married girls (Filipinas) who have worked in 'girlie' bars.
Some of the marriages have stood the test of time, some have been disastrous.
Above all else, these ladies are human beings, often with sad stories behind them and families in living in real poverty...families that they are now supporting.
