Australian sport is suffering ‘the blackest day in its history’ after claims of widespread drug use by elite athletes and links with organised crime.

In a year of back-to-back Ashes series and a time when some of Europe’s elite footballers are seeking to further their careers Down Under, the results of a year-long government investigation are worrying for a sport-loving nation.

'This is the blackest day in Australian sport,' said Richard Ings, the former chief of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency.
