My thoughts exactly beat the Eurotrash at their own game (I'll conveniently overlook the fact that theres a fair few of them in the Sky team )

And a very well done to the SKY team. It really is true team achievement from all concerned.

We both watched it live yesterday, and must admit I did begin to have a niggling doubt that the sky team had left it too late. But no, how exciting was that to see the yellow jersey actually leading off the mad dash sprinters.
Mark Cavendish carried it off great.

    Wonderful stuff!!

Just watch all those Bradley wannabe's from now on

Here's why I think it matters:

The Sky team was formed by David Brailsford with the express intention of going for a win in the Tour de France.

He tried to get sponsorship from the City, but got nowhere. BSkyB agreed to sponsor the team because James Murdoch is a cyclist; James Murdoch is no longer in charge at BSkyB because of the phone hacking scandals.

So - not a lot of UK corporate interest in cycling (of course, that may change now) and the team only exists because James Murdoch is a rider himself.

Having got the money, could Dave Brailsford, who, lets remember, is the head of British Cycling, with a string of Olympic medals, get together an all British team to support his three British stars (none of whom were born in Britain - pertinent to us here!) No - he could not find enough British riders to make up the six domestiques and had to get people from elsewhere.

Which tells me that there's a problem - Britain has three brilliant riders but just not enough strength in depth.

I hope this can be overcome soon.

Cycling like chess is something that both the Philippines and the UK are good at.

Anyone else seen this go through?

    ... that's really interesting, Peter ...

... so, too, is my son - a Perth United Cycling Club veteran - who's also fortunate enough to've worked for more than 20 years as a Bike Mechanic with an old-established local business. Used to be a keen enthusiast myself (albeit as a touring cyclist) until impaired hearing gradually rendered it unsafe for me to risk venturing out in today's heavy traffic.

Okay. That explains why our minibus driver, while I was in the Philippines last year, played a good game of chess.
