I just wish the Chinese would backoff. But is there any chance of them doing that, I wonder?
This Telegraph report seems a little more sinister.

But in a separate interview, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said the Philippines has no capability to wage war.
Trillanes pointed out that the law which was supposed to ensure military modernization has failed due to corruption.

"China has refuted claims that troops in the country’s south are preparing for war over a territorial dispute with the Philippines. However growing warmongering rhetoric in the Chinese media is heightening tensions in the region.
The row centers on tiny islands in the South China Sea which are believed to sit on massive oil and gas reserves.
"The reports alleging that the PLA Guangzhou Military Area Command and the Navy's South China Sea Fleet have entered combat readiness are not true,"the Chinese Ministry of National Defense said in a statement on its website on Friday.
Despite the government statement there have been online reports that China ordered troops in the Guangzhou region to the second highest level of combat readiness."

I heard that the Chinese Embassy staff were offered safe passage out of Manila in a bus, guarded by PNP's finest.

Loida Nicholas Lewis, who organised the demo, is a US - resident lawyer and billionaire (Beatrice Foods) and by most accounts a clever sensible and decent woman. Her Wikipedia entry had been hacked, presumably by a Chinese enthusiast, when I looked just now...
