Small but terrible:
Here's ME thinking Maria was referring to a comment by one future President [Bill Clinton] about another [Gloria Macapagal - later Arroyo] ... when the two were classmates at university in the US.
"Small but terrible!"

i know this is an old post but i just want to share ^_^ i was a victim of these vile mosquitoes! when i was 23 i had the dengue fever, i was misdiagnosed as having UTI (same symptoms, we were told) and was discharged after 2 days in the hospital, i got rushed back again (to a different hospital this time) when my platelets dropped to a dangerously low level. i remember the doctors drilling this information in me on my one week hospitalization (i had 12 IV drips >_< all in all)
1) only the female dengue mosquitoes bite (don't know what's the good in knowing that really...)
2) i have a slim chance of surviving a second time around as it would be more fatal ^_^ (as subtle as a death threat can be)
looks like things are looking grim for dengue survivors like me-we must not be bitten twice!

Thank you Chiechie for sharing your experience with dengue. You are correct in that subsequent infections increase the risk of severe dengue, and I understand your concern. Please see the thread under “ Health Issues “ which I have updated with a new post ( http://filipinaroses.com/showthread....ngue-Fever-Map ).

• There is still no specific treatment or vaccine for dengue. It’s complicated because there are four different types of virus causing dengue ( serotypes – DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4 ). Recovery from one gives lifelong immunity, but infection by other serotypes increases the risk of severe dengue. It does this by “ confusing “ the immune response ( antibodies and “ T cells “ ). Recent work in several centres round the world has confirmed this. It has slowed development of a vaccine, although there is hope at least one ( being tested in Philippines and Thailand ) will be available by 2015 or sooner.
• Despite the 30 fold increase in dengue in the past 50 years such that it’s now endemic in over 100 countries, including Philippines – it is not usually fatal. Good medical care means less than 1% death rate, although it’s a leading cause of hospital admissions in many parts of the world.
