Container shipping
Hello =)
I plan to ship some personal items and some tinned food to Surigao City next month.
Has anyone had any experience shipping a container who could give me some advice please?
I plan to use a 20ft container from Yorkshire, UK to Surigao City, Philippines - the best quote I've had so far is £4,600.
Cheers

Shop around.
I made enquiries myself a few years back, but decided to send (6) Balikbayan boxes in the end. (They took 8 weeks to the Phils, delivered to my door unopened and nothing damaged).
It's cheaper to use a part-container if you're not going to be able to fill one.
I think it was a company in Hull who quoted me for a container.

Yes I'm in two minds - I don't have enough to fill the container but it's not possible to send in boxes. Part of my shipment is 100+ firebricks to make a pizza oven, couldn't get hold of them out there.
I just need to come up with some things I could put in the container which I could sell to cover some of the cost

f you get hold of a Filipino-English newspaper in the UK you will see many ads for this service.
One to try would be Alsomavic Cargo Ltd
Tel: 0208 208 0193/07957945745 (ask for Alfred). They have many outlets in the UK (London, Leeds, Birmingham, Portsmouth etc).
3 boxes (24x20x16) £100 different destinations.
4 weeks to Luzon, 6 weeks to Visayas/Mindanao

Hello britash, welcome here to the forum.
The quotation you have of £4600 for a 20ft container sounds pretty good actually.
Does that include insurance and 'door-to-door' service?
Normally the shipping company will deal with all the paperwork for you (customs, documents, transportation, 'other')
They will also explain all the details you need to be aware of. There are always a few differences depending on the company you use (and the price you pay)
If you're sure you won't fill the container you can always ask for shared container.
There are plenty of alternative means of packing such a lift-vans, crates and pallets etc which can be built to your specification and requirements.
As others have said there are also balikbayan boxes.
It's really up to you to think about what it is you want to ship.
What advice are you looking for?

Thanks for the help so far. I just wanted to check if it seemed a fair price, and it seems it is.
@Therpe I find many things hard to believe in the Philippines ;-) I tried manila and cebu but no joy, of the pizza ovens I found there they had shipped in their bricks.
I just have to come up with some ideas of what I could fill the space in the container with which I could sell in the Phils. So far I've come up with tinned food stuffs and heinz ketchup...

@Terpe thanks for the tip but I have the firebricks ready for my container now. Should be widely available but they are not, I searched pretty hard over there.

Aren't those little portable charcoal cookers they use out there made from firebrick/clay ?

@grahamw48 Yes they have clay bricks but they can't withstand very high temps. I couldn't find any good quality brick suitable for a commercial pizza oven (1500C+).

You'll probably find the firebricks available in the UK are made in the Philippines

The pizzas are cooked at about 400C but the mortar/bricks can withstand 1500C so they have a long life. Pizzas take from 90secs to 3mins
