IELTS - English Test - What is the pass grade please ?
Hi Guys,
My fiancee is scheduled to take her IELTS English Test on the 25th September in Ormoc.
She needs to attain a pass grade proving she she has A1 status that is defined on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as being:
Basic
User A1 Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
The various IELTS pass levels are defined as follow:
4 LIMITED USER- basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in understanding and expression, is not able to use complex language
5- MODEST USER- has partial command of language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field
6. COMPETENT USER- has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language particularly in familiar situations
7- GOOD USER- has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, and misunderstandings. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning
8 VERY GOOD USER- has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriateness . Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well
9. EXPERT USER
Has anyone any idea of which of these levels 4-9 constitutes a pass level to comply with the A1 requirement defined on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
ALSO if anyone has any experience of what to expect in the test and its format would be very much appreciated
Many Thanks As Always - DavRog

DavRog,
There really isn't any A1 level categorised for IELTS
Level A2 is said to be banded at a score of 3
The normal IELTS pass is at B1 level with a grade score of 4

Hi DavRog, the rules changed in November 2010 to introduce the test, but have been upgraded in July 2011. I just went to VFS in Manila, the British Council in Pasig, and a few schools there for clarification. For IELTS they need to score an average of 4.0 in Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking tests. Most Filipinos should be at a level of 6.0 or so. Hope this helps

Well I hope they simplify / streamline the testing and just have one test with one name and grade. Or better still, do away with it all together.

I think they will make it harder lastlid. You may need a higher grade to pass.

Oh.
I wondered about that. I did wonder if they would up the level that applicants would be required to pass at, to be approved for the visa..........
