A Swiss friend of mine took out a 99 year lease on an island near Coron (close to Palawan).

He had it all set up for groups of rich tourists to spend a week or two living the 'Robinson Crusoe Experience'.

One day a typhoon swung by and wrecked his boats (one of which, a large motor cruiser he'd bought in Hong Kong and sailed all the way to the island), and some of the Nipa huts he'd built.

He had repeated skirmishes with local fishermen
'invading' his property, and it all finished with him being practically beaten to death, and his young wife raped.

Shocking! The problem with doing it alone, Is there any sort of security risk in that area for the odd kidnapping etc?

yes there is some risk on security, in fact back in 2001 some abu sayeff terrorists sailed up from the south and raided Dos Palmas, took a group of tourists hostage

I am told it is much more secure now (discreetly) but I cannot see machine gun towers and radar installations there lol.


As for typhoons and earthquakes/tsuanmis, Central Palawan is about as safe as it gets regarding fault lines, active volcanoes, wave patterns etc although teh very north does get clipped by typhoons as they veer upwards after crossing Luzon.

BRITAIN could be forced to pay out millions of pounds a year in pensions to foreigners who have never worked here thanks to the EU, it emerged yesterday.

Is it really End days for the UK or has it already begun??

my misses family took me near to the place where they were kidnapped but i did'nt know to be worried or to see a guard patroling the grounds of the hotel we stayed in thru the night with a shotgun

Gentlemen ... I'm ALMOST certain you'd BOTH be entitled to a State Pension - based on the respective amounts each of you has paid in National Insurance contributions over the years preceding your retirement dates - irrespective of *whether or not you left the UK to live overseas; it's YOUR money, after all.

Why do I believe *that to be the case?

Well, back in 2008 - during the first of my two trips to the Phils - I befriended a middle-aged English bloke [an ex-forum member] who'd married a Filipina and settled in Davao del Norte'. And he suggested I should consider moving out there permanently myself ... since the cost of living was much cheaper - and I'd be able to arrange to have my pensions (I have an occupational one also!) sent to me regularly.

in some cases, depending on which country you move to, however, the level of your UK state pension will be frozen, either at the time you move abroad or the time you first claim it. This means your pension will not be uprated in line with inflation, as it would be if you lived in the UK. Britain has special agreements with some countries, though, which mean that, if you live there, your pension will be uprated each year just as if you were still in the UK. These countries are: all of the EEA countries (all EU countries plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), the USA, Serbia, Montenegro, Mauritius, Jersey and Guernsey, the Philippines, Croatia, Israel, Jamaica, Barbados, Bermuda, Macedonia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, the Isle of Man and Sark.

Essentially this means that most receivable pension payments should only be taxed once if you’re living in a country which has a double taxation agreement with UK. (ie Philippines)

Normally, any pension payments above individual personal allowances will be taxed at source in the UK but, if you are resident in the Philippines, and you inform HMRC that your pension will be taxed in your country of residence, then HMRC will authorise payment of your pension without deduction of tax.

Means you not only benefit from indexed linked pensions, but you receive them tax-free.

All of this is true, I've worked with blokes pulling a royal navy and state pension whilst resident in the phils. Your pension will certainly go alot futher in the phils than the uk!!

They knew exactly what they were doing....at the time the right wing unions had a stranglehold on the industry and with ever rising wage demands it made perfect sense to flood the uk with the rubbish we see here now littering our streets being paid minimum wages, that's if there working if not the downtrodden tax payers are getting shafted left right and centre.

The tax payers are the only victims here, the parasite dole merchants and those blacked roma types don't give a toss.

It was a 1955 Austin A30.

Dad was in the Royal Navy, and the car was shipped out for him...one of the perks the forces had in those days. Still had to pay for it of course.

Virtually every car on the road in Malaya and Singapore was British, because of the old colonial connection, and of course they drove on the correct side of the road...as in Hong Kong.

We were there 3 years, and young as I was, I can remember virtually every day of it.
