How much are digital cameras in PI?

I was thinking of buying a new digital camera when i go to the phils in a few weeks. Are they cheaper there than in the UK? And what's the average price for a standard run of the mill camera?

Buy one at Duty free before you go. I got a CASIO Exilim. Takes SD cards and holds about 200 photos and little videos too. Great quality shots. Any questions give me a shout.

EXILIM Zoom EX-Z33 SILVER- £120. Could get a discount in electric store at Duty free.

Back when I bought it was February 13 2007 It was £220. Now its a bargain at £120. It is 10.1 Megapixel. The LCD screen is clear and the zoom facility is optical. The holds so much photos, it was more than enough for a 21 day visit It you are worried, get a 2 GB SD card.

If you want I can send you a email of one of the photos it produces. there are some in my album already.

    Hi triple5,

I compared many things when we were in Cebu City 5 Months ago.

Everything was much more expensive in Cebu City.

I would always buy in the UK these days, and you get a bona fide guarantee

There is some good research material here. http://www.cameras.co.uk/

Points to note- Sony have their own memory cards.

You sure they have anything less than £500 pounds in those shops. Their customers are very exclusive.

Uk unless your stoping over in Hong Kong but as the pound so weak probably better to get here.

Plus compared to Phill you will have some proper warranty and normally far easier to take back and exchange etc i find generally.

On our last trip our digtal camera ran out of memory and we used our mobile phones. Both 5 megapixel or higher with carl zeiss lens etc loads of memory etc.

Pictures perfect for us the sun was shining great views, people smiling and we didn't look so much like tourists.

In phill I would rather walk round the mall or in a resturant just with my Phone rather than a phone and a camera..
Nearly all the pictures the wife or I take in phill are portraits and group shots very rarely landscape.

If you are going to take pictures of scenery prehaps you do need a all singing camera i guess it depends.
Oh lord why did you make so many clothes and shoe shops

    Buy where you live.

Getting a great deal when you are in another country is fine but what happens when it goes wrong? How will the guarantee work out? If you buy from a local shop with a reputation to uphold, the chances are that you will get good service easily.

Good choice, but I prefer ones that are rechargeable, like my phone. But that can be difficult with Philippines electricity

Flexibility of ordinary batteries is good. You'll need to get AA batteries with you on the trip, so they be easy to obtain.

Word and the high capacity ones only charge at the last mintues as they lose there charge quickly.

We bought some new rechargable battries i think they were 2700 mah a tenner for four from maplins although im sure you could get cheaper elsewhere. They were the business we ran out of memory cards before the first set of battries were run down in four days of crazed photo taking

    Take ages to recharge though.

Totally agree, Hong Kong is Camera Heaven for any serious amateur photographer but warranty is a problem and there was a dramatic rise in prices of items like lenses back in January; Canon added 50% across the board to lens prices and Nikon was not far behind, DSLR body prices were hit as well but not by so much.

Mid range point and shoots have also not been hit quite so hard but have still been affected by the exchange rate against the Yen.

The Phils was a little cheaper last year for some top end kit but not enough to make it worth it, most electronics are cheaper and more modern in the UK particularly IT kit like memory, hard drives, motherboards and so on. (obviously you can get the latest kit anywhere it's just that it tends to be much more expensive to buy the latest and greatest in the Phils)

Good choice triple5 on the wee Fujifilm FinePix A170 you'll be very happy with that I'm sure.

Hong Kong airport is much more expensive than the UK for just about any item at the moment let alone cameras.

In HK you can buy cameras with or without an International warranty. With warranty they are more expensive than in the UK - I know because I had to replace my Fuji Finepix F200 when the LCD screen failed overnight on a BA flight to HK a couple of months back. Even more galling was that it was a business purchase (Genuine) so in The UK I could also reclaim the VAT. So the price differential was even bigger.

If you take a chance on the warranty in Mong Kok or Wanchai even at the current exchange rate you could probably shave 10% of the best UK internet prices, or get a bundle of goodies like spare battery, memory card, case or tripod thrown in.

    Never been there

I was commenting on the basis of what used to be available on Ebay often 30% or more less than UK prices but that was last year before the pound collapsed against the Yen.

I often looked at the lenses and it was so tempting but I never quite had the guts to actually buy from the Hong Kong ebay retailers. I know a couple of folk who did buy their kit that way and their stuff sailed through customs no problem, they were also lucky in not having any problems with the kit either.

    Jim
