The Phils uses the American NTSC broadcast standard we use PAL

I don't have a PS3 so I'm not sure it can be set for NTSC if you bought the PS3 in the UK it will be set to PAL.

A lot of devices these days are switchable so best to check out the manual to see if you can change the output to NTSC.

Most Electronics are generally the same as or slightly dearer than you would find the same item in the UK.

For IT equipment you can buy cheap in the Phils but it's older technology, you will get things like the latest computer memory much cheaper over here.

As for trying to import a flat screen TV into the Phils I think that is a little crazy to be honest A small one in a suitcase will get destroyed in transit and you could be questioned at customs as you enter the country.

Small electronics (latest and greatest) buy in the UK, large stuff buy in the Phils.

I've sent desktop puters and monitors inside balikbayon boxes, got there in one piece, surprised me that they worked. you can get wooden crates to put your tv in, I'll be sending a 52 inch 1080p when I am ready to move over there.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'm wanting to buy one in the uk as we're are 90% emigrating to the phils this sort of time next year, that and I'm bored looking at my old crt tv. I'll put all my gear in a 20 or 40ft container when we go so got no worries about it getting thrown about in luggage or a balikbayon box.

buying a decent tv should display both NTSC and pal,so you need to check before buying.

Yes times have changed a lot, most kit supports both these days even our old style CRT telly in the Phils can do PAL and NTSC

I just didn't know how hard or easy it was to change the output of a PS3.

gaming on the ps3 is region free with ps3 games only so will work on any tv automatically, dvds and blu ray are regional coded and will only play movies from the same region as the ps3 came from, same as a dvd player but you can get a dvd player region free to play movies from any region.

I appreciate how the regional coding works although I did not realise that games were region free but then again, I don't play games

I take it then that a PS3 will automatically detect the currently set encoding system (PAL/NTSC) of the TV that is attached to it and adjust it's output accordingly?

You're not the last mate 32" Philips CRT and I'm sticking with it, my eyesight isn't what it once was and I prefer the overall response of a CRT set.

Only the very high end LCD's seem free of artifacts in the picture and stuff like that bugs me

I think almost all the DVD players I've seen in the Phils are region free, even if they are not, all the pirate disks will be free of any kind of regional coding

But yes your check-list is basically fine!

my crt gave up last year,i had it for over ten years so cant complain.

with any new tv you need to update the firmware and make sure the signal source is an upscaler to 1080i like sky hd or a humax freesat box and it will be a big improvement over anything else like the built in tuner or standard sky box.

i cant see the point in watching philipino tv on a 1080i,as i never seen a decent picture on any tv

I tend to agree the only point would be in watching blue ray DVD's or as you say upscaled ordinary DVD's.

I wanted to get Digital SkyCable at our place in Las Pinas the other year, I was willing to pay a full year's subscription up front but they refused because no one else in the subdivision had SkyCable already.

We ended up with analogue Las Pinas Cable which is pretty variable quality and a limited range of channels, it is a third of the price of SkyCable at less than 500 peso a month so that is a good thing given the change in our personal circumstances this year but it would have been nice to have digital TV over there. :(

About a week after SkyCable refused us and Las Pinas cable had gone ahead and installed, someone with a half a brain at SkyCable called back and almost begged us to let them install, they had finally figured out that expanding their network into a new subdivision is a good thing and not as most people in customer services departments in Philippine companies seem to think just an expense

Ah well same applies to PLDT, getting a land line is ridiculous bureaucratic mess and we had already had an account with them for over 2 years at a different address !

That is a mighty fine idea. Its a long time since I was in honkers, I thought it was very expensive for all stuff though? Is it pretty easy to do this anyway? Presumably there is a discount cos you'd be buying from the source.

As for the mentioned ghosting on screens I know waht your on about. You've got to get a kuro for like 2500quid before your really free from it. I get what hi fi every month (something to read on the bog!) and the kit i'd like to buy justs gets more expensive every time. Spent over 2 grand on hi fi stuff and with in 6 months I was looking to upgrade. Stupid, stupid. For stuff for my lounge I reckon 5000quid should cover what I want to buy!!!!!!! WHAT AM I THINKING?????

If your going to buy a large tv, buy a plasma 720p or 1080p. large LCD are bad only good for small screen due to the brightness.
