Healthcare Insurance in Phils.
Hi Folks,
Have any of the forumers here ever taken out or paid for (Philippines) healthcare insurance for family members in Phils. I just wanted to get some info about it, how much it would cost and the benefits etc.
If I were to get into this sort of thing in any way, It would have to be on the basis that I would pay the premiums directly to the insurance provider, but I don't know if this would be possible. I really wouldn't like to hand over hard earned money for this purpose only to possibly find out later (if or when an illness or accident occured) that the money had been spent on something else.

HI Iain I am a member of Philhealth Insurance in the Philippines, It's quite helpful coz it's just only small percentage deducted to my hospital bills. (Approx. 20-25%)it cost 100 pesos a month and I am paying quarterly (well not this time my Dad maintain it). There are some acceredited banks that collects the payment but I'm not sure if you can do it online or by money transfer because there is a form to filled up it's a Phil government system so I guess not that much techy. You can check the self individually paying on the PHilhealth website
In addition there are private insurance as well such as Fortune Life, Ayala Insurance and a lot more, but I haven't try any of them because they are private company and I am afraid they might be close due for economic crisis.Don't make promises when you are in JOY. Don't reply when you are SAD.
Don't take decisions when you are ANGRY. Think twice, Act wise. BE happy.

She also believed that everyone deserves a chance to prove oneself individually and hoped that the courtesy would be returned. That girl is dead now, and all that is left is her shadow. To give one a chance to prove thyself is a chance for you to become dwindled in the dissappointment.

Hi Leah,
I managed to send an email to Philhealth asking if it was possible for me to do this and if so how could I go about it. I'll wait and see what they say. When you say "it's just only small percentage deducted to my hospital bills. (Approx. 20-25%)" do you mean that you still have to pay 75% of the cost of the hospital treatment yourself?

That will likely be expensive, I bought Ana insurance through Blue Cross after James was born, that cost around 30,000 peso per annum at the time.
Pregnancy was not covered in the first 12 months.
Ana does not understand insurance and she did not want it, she always says 'I am strong, I trust in God' in later years we let it lapse because of other pressures on our resources.
Problem is you will never be able to insure everyone in the family that might need it. Hospital bills vary a lot in Manila and there is always the suspicion that they charge more if a westerner is known to involved.
The charges are a lot lower than you might think, a consultation with a specialist at a hospital has usually cost me 400 peso.
When I looked at care for myself back when I was stupidly optimistic about life it was going to cost around 1000 quid a year just for me, so that was a non starter.
Very first time I went over for Christmas I seriously injured my ankle (went over on it) while I was packing my things just literally 15 hours or so before I was due to fly. I live on my own and I was literally dragging myself around the house trying to finish packing, I tell you I dragged myself through Glasgow Dubai and NAIA nothing was going to stop me getting there I really could barely walk
When I got there eventually we went to the doc who bandaged me up and charged 400 peso.
You pay for all your own drugs too.
Good health insurance is just horribly expensive, we just don't know how lucky we are in this country!

I thought this was a good service Iain, they accepted my paying by credit card but I did that in person at the office on the boundary of Mandaluong and Makati.
I wish I had been able to keep it up for Ana but she really did not want it.
Oh and it was one of the lower end peso plans not the dollar plans.

the Philhealth pays up to 30% of medical/confinement cost depending on the cases and you should have paid at least 3 months of premium prior to the quarter of availment. Insurance companies in the phils that i have tried were of prudential life health insurance, intellicare ( multi national companies in the phils uses the intellicare health insurance) ..

Hi Iain
The advantage of Philhealth is its only small pay, as what ate leah said if ur self employed/individually paying its only 100 a month 300 quarterly. Hospital deduction varies to situations, at most its 50% plus but it differs when it comes to the diagnosis of the doctor. If example illness is not yet detected but will use lab tests that are not necessarily needed by the final diagnosis its more or less 30% will be covered by philhealth plus there are meds that are not covered by philhealth. My sister payed for 6 mos only but she had used it twice one was deducted 30% and other is more than 50%. Important is to really know what is the patients illness and to just use lab tests that are needed. There are some hospitals who asks deposit first before admitting the patient but some dont and some accepts installments. I think there is good and bad side anywhere, anything and everything. Yes, ustill have to pay the remaining balance after deduction is made plus maintenance meds, then after follow up check ups Correct me if im wrong if my input is not right im talking based on personal experience.
Having health insurance is good just shame even if its not expensive mostly here do not have coz even to buy rice its a struggle which makes me feel abit upset. Health is very important
I must add also that if ur using the philhealth benefit for giving birth you should have at least paid for a year.

I think Philhealth is very confusing with the variations in what percentage of the cost they will actually cover. I'm waiting for a reply from them and I will see if I can get a more of an understanding of what they do and don't cover and why in different cases they seem to pay out different percentages of the total bill.

Have you checked on Medicard, Iain? My friend and her family is using Medicard and it seems to be very helpful even on check-ups. I think it's just important that you check if they have any accredited hospitals or dental clinics at your family's area to ensure accessibility when you need them.

Hi Iain, you can try looking into Philamcare....they were really good back then, not sure now though if they're still as good as they used to be....
I used to work at Philam Insurance before (few years ago, lol) which is under AIG.....
AIG in the philippines consist of the following - Philam life Insurance, Philam Insurance (non-life), Philam plans, Philam care and Philam Bank."10% of life is made up of what happens to you, 90% is decided by how you react"
