£650 million collected in visa fees last year
i know it's from the News of the World , but looks like it could be true
At the moment foreigners can apply for “indefinite leave to remain” status after five years—which means they can settle here forever with full access to our welfare state.
But new tighter controls could see that scrapped so immigrants can only stay on if they become British citizens. A Westminster source said: “We want to abolish indefinite leave to remain.”

i thought they were doing this anyway next year. no more ILR, but probationary citizenship, and within a time limit you will have to apply for citizenship or lose your probationary citizenship
