    Exclamation Be Careful: Deadly Leptospirosis

This incident happened recently in North Texas . A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in ICU. She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from without using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouse s and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

1 Death out of the Billions of cans drunk each day is not really something to worry about. More chance of being killed by a toothpick.

due to poverty they resort to eating farm rats coz they are safe to eat unlike those 'kadiri' house rats . pinoys will always love adobo - it doesn't matter if its a rat, insect or big lizard, as long as it tastes like a meat ok na yan!

This story about rats urine is an urban myth, i.e. totally untrue.

Check on a browers for "Leptospirosis coke"

May I suggest that when you hear something which does not sound right that you do a search check. There are so many false stories, often about email viruses which are hoaxes. I check "Hoax" followed by something from the suspect email. Then annoy the friend who sent it to me by telling them !!!!!

This is taken from the online The Leptospirosis Information Center :-

    Official position of the LIC:

[I]While there is a theoretical risk of human infection from residual rat urine on cans or bottles, the statistical risk is extremely small. Leptospira require constant immersion in water to survive, and so drying of the surface for any length of time will permanently kill the bacteria. Given that drinking containers are non-porous, surface moisture dries very quickly and cannot possibly contaminate the contents.

Drinking from a can or bottle that has been exposed to rat urine presents a risk in theory only. There are no reported cases in the literature of human infection being unequivocally traced to cans or bottles and no medical studies have been performed into leptospira on drinks containers, or into the relative bacterial levels of drinks containers and public toilets.

The emails usually report a study by 'NYCU'. There is no such University (it is an acronym for News You Can Use) and is in no way connected to New York University.[
    /I]

That is why always make sure its clean and better use a glass to avoid any trouble

    ANN and all other readers.

The email about the drink can was a HOAX, not true. Theres NO EVIDENCE of ANYONE contracting the decease in this manner.

The artcle I read said, in addition to the quote I show above:-

The email evolves over time, and currently we are seeing a rise in circulation in the USA, referring to deaths in several states. If you receive one of these messages, please delete it and ignore what it says. You are more at risk of being hit by lightning while riding a camel than contracting leptospirosis from a commercial drinks container.

Still i think it a good idea not to drink out straight out of a can or any container.

You may not catch leptosprirosis but hardly a wise thing to do.

Not wise to drink out of a can.

A real problem in doing so is:-

If you have say a wasp, or similar insect, enter the can and then you drink from it. It has happened that people have then suffered a sting inside the throat.

Now that could have serious consquences.

But this rat thing is just a 'tail'

Surely the wasp would be more interested in swimming for it's life rather than concentrating on stinging something it does not even know is a threat!
