1. “ Mabuhay ! From Manila “ Possibly from the 1950’s. This shows Taft Avenue ( William Howard Taft was former Governor General of the Philippines and US President ) ; City Hall ( opened 1939 ) ; Post Office ( built 1926, damaged World War II, rebuilt 1946 ) :-

2. “ Rizal Monument, Luneta “ ( park is crescent-moon shaped, hence name ), now known as Rizal Park. Monument dates from December 1913. Manila Hotel ( opened July 1912 ) in background :-

3. “ Fishing Boat, Manila “ :-
Probably taken over 100 years ago.

Poor water quality in Manila Bay has meant a decline in fishing, but sunsets just as beautiful now ( 2010 ) :-

1. “ Near Divisoria Market “ ( not Divisonio ):-

Divisoria’s roots as a commercial centre can be traced back to the Spanish era.

2. “ Binondo Canal “. Around 1910 :-

Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world, dating from 16th century, “ created “ by Spanish Governor Luis Dasmarinas. During Spanish colonial period many esteros ( canals ) were constructed in this area, entering the Pasig River.

3. “ Binondo Estero “ . Around 1910 :-

1. “ Puerta Real Gate “ :- Actually Royal Gate, dating from 17th century. One of the gates ( puertas ) of the Walled City of Intramuros, this one facing south, damaged in World War II, restored 1969-1989.

2. “ Santa Cruz Bridge “ :- Around 1902. Steel truss bridge destroyed in World War II, replaced after the War by reinforced concrete MacArthur Bridge.

3. “ Escolta Street from Moragua Square “ :- One of Manila’s oldest streets ( dates from 16th century ), in Binondo. Calle de la Escolta is Spanish for Escort Street. Prime commercial district until decline from 1960’s.

4. “ Jones Bridge and New Post Office “ :-

Connects Binondo with central Manila. Dates from 1916. ( William Jones was main author of Philippine Autonomy Act ). Destroyed in World War II, then reconstructed. Manila Central Post Office dates from 1926 ; damaged in World War II ; rebuilt after the War.

5. “ Plaza Lawton “ :- Around 1930 ? South end of Jones Bridge visible.

Named after American General Henry Lawton ( killed in 1899-1902 Philippine-American War ). Since 1970’s also known as Liwasang Bonifacio.

It would be nice if the traffic on Taft Avenue was still that orderly.

My late father in law drove a bus from the province to Manila 3 times a day from the early 60's to the mid 80's. You would struggle to make the same trip twice today.

Abaca ( Manila hemp ) . Harvested from a species of banana native to Philippines, extracted from leaf stems. Fibre originally used for twines and ropes, now most is pulped for specialised paper products including bank notes, filter paper and teabags.

Manila Cathedral :-

Located at Plaza de Roma in Intramuros, this was reduced to rubble in 1945 during the Battle of Manila. Previous cathedrals ( dating from 1581 ) had been destroyed by earthquakes and fire.

Manila Airport :-

The Airport on this site dates from 1948. In 1972 a fire damaged the original terminal building. In 1981 a new terminal ( Terminal 1 ) was built. This served as the domestic airport until another fire in 1985. The name changed from Manila International Airport to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in 1987. Terminal 2 was completed in 1998 and Terminal 3 in 2014. ( Terminal 4 dates from 1948 – “ Domestic Passenger Terminal “ ).

Of course you may share them :xxgrinning--00xx3: I don't claim copyright for any of these - indeed my photos may be already shared on the internet as I don't have my name imprinted on them. The " vintage " postcards are already shared elsewhere. It's impossible to trace the original ownership of the photos in Parts IV - VI but I have avoided uploading those which are clearly labelled " copyright ". ( Parts I - III are either from my old postcards or recent photos ).

Some members may be aware of " postcard fairs " , and old " real photographic " postcards are also available on sites like " eBay ". Good examples of local topographical cards may sell for a few pounds up to £ 40 or more.

If any member knows of issues around these photos please let me know and they can be deleted. That would be a shame as the purpose is to share - at no cost to the viewers or financial gain to me :smile:

Meantime, if anyone knows of errors in my descriptions please post :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Having studied your marvellous selection of postcards in minute detail, Alan ... I, personally, am of the considered opinion that the Philippines' capital - like many cities of a comparable size - looked aesthetically more appealing in the 'olden' days. :ReadIt:

Nowadays, of course, :cwm25: ... with its proliferation of high rise, multi-storey buildings, :icon_rolleyes: Makati City's Business & Finance District bears a much closer resemblance to Manhattan. :wink:

Yep ... and take a look at the way ladies dressed :yeahthat: - much more smartly (and prettier too!!:hubbahubba:) No slovenly, faded denim jeans and T-shirts back then! :xxparty-smiley-004: Not so keen on the 'winged' shoulder pad features, though.

At the time, 1978, I was seconded to Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, from Glasgow University, and visited various hospitals in the Philippines - in addition to sightseeing :smile:.

There was Martial Law under President Marcos, with around 16 pesos / £ 1 , I remember thinking even then how bad the traffic was, and one of the favourite songs was " Sayang " by Claire :smile:.

My mother has hundreds of photos of Singapore and Malaya in the 1950s... from when we lived there. Still very much colonial days (when for instance, the present airport in Singapore was still an RAF base).

Near enough to post here, this view of coconut rafts on Pagsanjan River appears to be from early last century.

Nowadays the Philippines is second only to Indonesia as the world’s biggest producer of coconuts - yet three out of five coconut farmers are said to live below the poverty line.

City of Malabon ( part of Metro Manila called CAMANAVA = CAloocan, MAlabon, NAvotas, and VAlenzuela ). This coloured view is from Tonsuya Bridge over the Malabon River, with the 400 years old San Bartolome Church ( recently restored ) in the background. Note the horse-drawn calesa, houses with steep roofs ( like nipa huts ), abundant trees, and electricity structure ( suggesting mid 1890s to early 1900s ; MERALCO ( Manila Electric Railroad And Light Company ) was founded in 1895 ). Epifanio de los Santos ( writer and politician ) was born here ( 1871 ), EDSA ( Avenue ) being named after him.

Roxas Boulevard ... in more peaceful times :smile:.

The Cavite Boulevard was part of architect Daniel Burnham’s plan for Manila. It was renamed Dewey Boulevard ( after U.S. Admiral George Dewey, under whose command the Spanish navy was defeated in the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 ).

During the 1960s it was ( again ) renamed, as Roxas Boulevard, in honour of the 5th President of the Philippines, Manuel Roxas.

I first visited the Philippines in 1978, while on secondment from University of Glasgow to Universiti Malaya. This " souvenir " may of of interest, in the light of the " GMA " (http://filipinaroses.com/showthread.php/59458-GMA-Release-Imminent!) and " Duterte " (http://filipinaroses.com/showthread.php/59510-Duterte-s-Summary-Execution-Policy) threads.

Ferdinand Marcos was the 10th President of the Philippines, from 1965 - 1986. He had won the presidential campaign against the 9th President, Diosdado Macapagal ( father of 14th President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ).

The " Newsweek " cover of April 10, 1978 understated his problems, although he HAD made progress in agriculture, industry and education during his first term. Martial Law had been in force since 1972, to control " communist and subversive forces " ; opposition politicians, notably Benigno Aquino ( father of 15th President Aquino ), were jailed ; there was increasing opposition to his corrupt rule ; his health was also failing. He was forced into exile in February 1986, to Hawaii, where he remained until his death in 1989.

Binondo is claimed to be the oldest Chinatown in the world, established 5 centuries ago. The name is derived from Tagalog, referring to the district’s originally hilly terrain. As previous photos show in this thread, many esteros ( canals ) were constructed here in the Spanish colonial period.

After World War II, businesses tended to relocate to Makati.

This photo, from early last century, includes Binondo Church ( where hero of the Philippine Revolution Andres Bonifacio was married in 1895 ) :-

More views of vintage Manila, from a century ago :-

Escolta Street ( Calle del la Escolta ), running parallel to the Pasig River, in Binondo, Chinatown. It was the city’s main commercial district until the 1960s :-

Plaza Goiti ( Plaza Lacson ) at the eastern end of Escolta, with Santa Cruz church. Named after Martin de Goiti who founded the City of Manila in 1571, renamed after Arsenio Lacson ( Mayor of Manila 1952-1962 ) :-

Note the trams in both of these photos. While horse-drawn trams dated from 1888, Manila’s trams ( " tranvia " in Spanish ) date from 1905. Manila’s electric tramway was built by Meralco ( Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company ). Tickets were 12 centavos for first class ( at the front ) and 10 centavos for second class. The trams were destroyed during the 1945 Battle of Manila. Meralco didn’t restore them, but shifted its core business to providing power.

This shows bamboo rafts and cascos ( oblong barges ) loaded with nipa palms on their way to market. Nipa palms ( Nypa fruticans ) grow in soft mud and slow moving tidal and river waters, the long feathery leaves ( still ) being used as roof material. “ Bahay kubo “ ( cube house ), describing the shape of the dwelling, became known as “ Nipa hut “ during the U.S. colonial era :-

Views from 1930s :-

Plaza Goiti ( Plaza Lacson ), public square in Santa Cruz. This contrasts with my earlier photo of the plaza ( #78 above ), with no trams now visible. Martin de Goiti founded the city of Manila in 1571, and Arsenio Lacson was Manila mayor in 1952-1962 :-

Manila Central Post Office, built in 1926, but severely damaged in WWII ; rebuilt in 1946, preserving most of its original design. It had been part of Daniel Burnhams’s plan for the city, placing the building by the Pasig River for easy water transportation of mail :-

Fort Santiago - the Custom House can be seen in the distance across the river. The Anda Monument, outside the northwest edge of Intramuros, was created in honour of Simon de Anda y Salazar, Philippines Governor General 1770-1776. The monument was damaged in WWII ; reconstructed and removed in the 1960s to Bonifacio Drive ( where it remains after recent plans to move it again were abandoned ) :-

The Embassy was first constructed to house the US High Commission in the late 1930s ; with independence on July 4, 1946, it became known as the US Embassy :-

Manila Airport in the late 1960s :-

The current site for the airport dates from 1948, following independence. The international runway and taxiway were built in 1954. The control tower and terminal building for international passengers was inaugurated in 1961. Following fire damage in 1972, a smaller terminal was rebuilt in its place. This became the international terminal until a new " Terminal 1 " was built in 1981 ( named after " Ninoy " Aquino in 1987 ). The old terminal survived as Manila’s domestic airport until another fire damaged it in the mid 1980s.

My photo from 90 years ago shows a Packard ambulance - 6 cylinder, 81 horsepower - outside the Philippine General Hospital. The Packard marque was founded in 1899 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Packards were a top-selling luxury brand of cars at this time, and also produced trucks in addition to ambulances, with markets in over 60 countries abroad. The last Packard cars were produced about 60 years ago :-

This view of Manila is from the early 1950s. Philippine Airlines were flying Douglas DC-6 aircraft between 1948-1954, after which they were sold at a time when PAL had discontinued loss-making long haul routes. Over 700 such aircraft were produced between 1946 and 1958. In 1948 Manila Airport had moved to its current site adjacent to the Villamor Airbase ( see #91 above ).

This is a view of Ayala Avenue, corner with Makati Avenue, in the 1980s.

Ayala Avenue has been called the " Wall Street of the Philippines ". Part was previously a runway for the Nielson Airport, destroyed during the Japanese occupation in World War II, and converted into a road in 1949.

The first bridge to cross the Pasig River was the Puente Grande ( Large Bridge ) opened in 1630 ; the wooden superstructure was replaced with stone arches in 1814, as Puente de Piedra ( Stone Bridge ), severely damaged by an earthquake in 1863. It was reconstructed as Puente de Espana ( Bridge of Spain ), opened in 1875, widened in 1901, with tracks laid for " tranvias " ( trams / streetcars ) in 1905.

Severe flooding damaged the bridge in 1914, and a replacement was opened in 1921. This was the Jones Bridge ( I ) - named after the principal author of the Philippine Autonomy Act assuring future independence. It was destroyed in WW II, then replaced by the present Jones Bridge ( II ).
