i just found out yesterday that i'm pregnant. i rang my gp early this morning and they told me that they will pass on my details to the midwife and then the midwife will ring me. i have been searching about pregnancy and how the midwife/hospital deals with it. i found out that most pregnant women don't get to see their doctors till they're 8-12 weeks of pregnancy, why is that? why can't they see us right away? :Erm:

 It's over 40 years since my late [first] wife gave birth. And, although I've been married to a Filipina since 2008, we're both past the age for starting our OWN family. Pity, 'cos I've heard marvellous stories about the Fil/Brit genetic combination in the "bonnie babies department"! So, you've lots to look forward to already ... just ask Trusted Member, grahamw - who will, I'm
sure, be more than happy to confirm. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

May I add my congratulations and best wishes for your pregnancy :Hellooo:.

You’re not one of the forum members I know personally, but you say that this is your second time to be pregnant, and I hope / assume that your first pregnancy was without complications .

You also say – naturally – that you have been searching for information about pregnancy, in addition to telling your doctor, and ( no doubt ) talking to your husband, other loved ones and friends.

Of course you will normally see a small number of healthcare professionals regularly, who will aim to make your pregnancy and childbirth as comfortable and safe as possible.

The aims of antenatal care have always been to maintain the mother in the best possible state of health, so that she may give birth to a healthy child ; to recognise abnormalities and complications at an early stage ; and to educate the mother in pregnancy and labour – you will already know this !

Your midwife is an expert in normal pregnancy and childbirth, caring for you at home or in hospital. They will also look after you in labour if everything is OK. Hopefully you will form a good relationship with your midwife from the start. Your doctor and / or obstetrician will deal with any particular concerns ( such as previous complications or illness, presumably on your UK medical record ). Your first and main contact is naturally the midwife. There is therefore normally no need to see any other specialist, especially in the early weeks of pregnancy.

No doubt you have already seen the comprehensive link below :-

I’m sure all forum members wish you well, and please keep us informed :xxgrinning--00xx3: !

yeah, everything was fine the first time i was pregnant. i was just surprised that they won't see me right away as you may know it's different in philippines. i want them to tell me the right vitamins that i need to take and what else i should do. for me, it's still best i talk to them rather than assume things on my own. nothing i can do, i'll just wait for them to contact me.. thnx doc alan..:xxgrinning--00xx3:

The hospitals usually Offer women two scans. The first one is on your 8-14 weeks pregnancy which is the dating scan. Then the second scan is called anomaly scan which takes place from18-21 weeks. In this country, as soon as you knew that you are pregnant, you have to book an appointment to your gp, then they will tak to the midwife to see if there are any available appointment for you. You can't compare the set up here and in the Philippines wherein you see the doctor straight away and will check any problems throughout your pregnancy. Here, the midwife is the one who looks after the pregnant women (known as midwife led care) unless they will see any complications on your pregnancy then they will refer you to the Medical team.
On your first day, the midwife will ask you about your family medical history. Then they will take some bloods. Just make sure that you will get all the information you want to know, and don't hesitate to ask them if you are in doubt or anything that comes to your mind. They will be happy to help you. Then after that the midwife will book you an appointment for your first scan and will receive a letter through post.
After your first scan, they will take your height and weight(if not done by the midwife in the GP surgery), test your urine. The midwife will ask you some questions regarding your health then will tell you the result of the blood tests done when you were with your midwife in the gp surgery. Then they will ask if you want to be test if your baby will have chances of having Down's Syndrome. All of my children were given this test. So there's no harm if you say yes, anyway it's free. I know this things because I'm pregnant again for the third time.
It doesn't matter if the midwife will look after you. The midwife are well respected and they are like doctors not like in the Philippines wherein the midwife are just for those people who can't afford to pay the doctor's fee. I know this things happens in the Philippines way back when I will still training in some public hospitals.

Congratulations to both of you. Good luck.

Many congratulations bhem_bhem to you both. Can I recommend that you seek medical advice about flying such a long distance in the very early stages of pregnancy ............ Of course, we are all different but, sadly, I speak from experience and to this day wished I had not done so with my first pregnancy :NoNo: :NoNo:

Just want to share. When I was pregnant, I saw more of the midwife than the doctor.
The midwife did several blood and urine tests.
Hospital provided 2 scans. You'll get letters from hospital when you're due a scan.
When my due date drew near, I saw the midwife every 2-3 weeks and I got to listen to my baby's heartbeats which was so exciting.
Make sure to keep your maternity notes and bring them whenever you see midwife/gp or go to hospital.
