There aren't any english speaking countries there as a first language of course. Not sure how advanced they really are towards the goal, but it's encouraged to learn english in Korea. You'll notice many dvds from Korea have some menus in english. Doesn't make it english speaking, just something they want to encourage the knowledge of.

Quite well known in Thailand as well - maybe encouraged by wanting to cater towards Aussie tourists

I find one can often make oneself understood in Australia, also.;)

If you count pidgin English, then include Papua New Guinea (genuine sample - flight safety card in Air Nuigini Airbus ... "Supos bulwas im buggerup, ere wot you do..." ("bulwas" =- fixed wing aircraft ; helicopter = "bigfella Mixmaster bilong Jesus Christ"!)

At my age, I'm prepared to accept neurotic...as part of the (young and gorgeous) package. :D

Besides which, being slightly deaf and a little barmy....most of it goes over my head these days. :)

I did a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language TEFL a few years ago. So I discovered that in Thailand they teach English in many if not all of their schools (as long as they can afford an English Teacher). A lot of British people work out there as English teachers in the schools, from nursery to university level and also at business level. It is evident that although they have their own national language, that English is a pretty big 2nd language.

I've got my TEFL cert too.

I used to teach English in Hong Kong in between 'proper' jobs. :)
