Very sad that one of our 'aces' of the skies loses his life.

Sad indeed. The Red Arrows flew over Scarborough and Whitby last week http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/picturesoftheday/8704065/Pictures-of-the-day-16-August-2011.html?image=26

Yes, very sad.

I believe the first Red Arrows pilot to lose his life, although there have been 7 previous accidents since the the team were formed back in the 60s.

I'd like to know if he ejected or not as it's very strange if he didn't regardless of height. :Erm:

When I was in RAF Valley in the 80's a Hawk trainer went down at low level, and I was part of the team crawling on the field picking up small bits of aircraft while the military police peeled one of the pilots off the rocks  In a 2-seater Hawk when they eject one goes right, the other goes left, however when both pilots ejected the plane was at a right-angle to the ground so one ejected straight into the rocks :NoNo:, the other suffered 2 broken legs.

I think I heard or read that they are fitted with rocket powered seats as standard, his body was found on the bank of the river, but maybe he never had the chance to be vertical and eject. I too have seen two air crashes and ejctions, both died!
