Yes, you need to apply for, and have received your FLR BEFORE applying for a NI number.

Until the FLR lands on your doorstep, it's still illegal for you to work in the UK.

hiya yen,

yes u have to wait for your flr to come through.

just like - if ones status is married & holding a spousal/ settlement visa, one may contact the local job centre or pls check
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/number.htm
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/NationalInsurance/IntroductiontoNationalInsurance/DG_190057

u may phone them, they will send u a form to fill up, post them back & they will post it back to u a letter with your NI number then the national insurance number card will follow.

also the employer always ask a letter issued by the home office w/ an endorsement that u are allowed to work in the uk w/o restrictions or has no limit on ur stay. u may email the home office stating your status & that is for job purposes. they will reply back to u. then they will send to u the letter.

always keep the letter for ur future use.

some things to look into as well in the future is to apply for a bank for your work pay. company always ask for bank details. in some cases u may use ur husband's bank details until u get one. have a billing statement under your name or joint name with your husband like water, electricity, phone, house rent etc. at least one as the bank will ask u for that. They will ask for your employment contract as well. Bank only wanted to see your name & address in it. They will give u instructions though.

Hope u can sort our your NI# soon & Good Luck with your job hunting.:)
