He's also the same fella who as Immigration Minister said in Oct 2008

"It's been too easy to get into this country in the past and it's going to get harder," he said.

The Home Office said the new points-based system provided "a powerful and flexible set of controls".

Not a good day in the Commons for the Socialists a lagered up thuggish MP is alleged to have clumped a newspaper seller

"A Labour MP was last night facing a police investigation into claims that he assaulted a man in the Houses of Parliament after a drunken karaoke party.

Paul Farrelly, 48, an outspoken critic of anti-social behaviour, is alleged to have left the victim ‘bloodied and bruised’ after punching him above his left eye.

A number of witnesses saw the incident in a corridor near Parliament’s Sports and Social Club, the venue of a raucous sing-song on Thursday night."

He's probably keeping his hero the Bottler company in a bunker located in deepest, darkest Auchtermuchty

Joking apart, though ... there actually IS an old wartime bunker in the 'Kingdom' of Fife; it was kept secret until recent years, and has since been made into a tourist attraction. And its locatation is not a million miles from the ancient, unpronouncable (to the English! :D) Royal Burgh of Auchtermuchty!

More news here - it's now Bottler Bercow

Commons Speaker John Bercow has thrown a lifeline to the shamed former Labour MP Phil Woolas - just 24 hours after being publicly encouraged to do so by his outspoken wife.

In a surprise ruling, Mr Bercow said the disgraced former immigration minister should be given time to clear his name through the courts before a by-election is held in his Oldham constituency.

The decision means his former constituents will not have an MP until the courts have ruled on his case.

Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman has faced anger from Labour MPs after her decision to disown expelled MP Phil Woolas.

It has provoked what Labour MPs and ex-ministers call a "mutiny" against the Labour leadership at Westminster, the BBC's John Pienaar says.

Ms Harman faced the backbench anger during a meeting of Labour MPs on Monday evening.

Mr Woolas says he has had pledges of support from "dozens of colleagues".

He is raising cash for a legal challenge to the election court ruling which led to his axing as an MP and suspension from Labour.
Backlash

According to one MP present at the Monday meeting, Ms Harman was described to her face by one colleague as "a disgrace". Another suggested she should "consider her position" - political code for resignation, BBC Radio 5 Live's chief political correspondent John Pienaar said.

He added that a former cabinet minister said: "I have never seen anything like it. Harriet was attacked from every direction."
