    NCCC Mall Davao fire

Philippines mall fire: At least 37 feared dead in Davao.

At least 37 people are feared to have died in a fire that tore through a shopping mall in the southern Philippines city of Davao, local officials say.

Firefighters battled for hours to extinguish the blaze that started on the third floor and spread to the floor above, trapping call centre employees.

Their chances of survival were "zero", Davao's Vice-Mayor Paolo Duterte said.

President Rodrigo Duterte, the vice-mayor's father, visited the scene.

President Duterte, a Davao native, met families of the missing outside the burning NCCC mall.

The cause of the fire, which began on Saturday morning, is being investigated.

The mall's marketing manager, Janna Abdullah Mutalib, said the blaze started on the third floor, where clothes, appliances and furniture were sold, the Philippines Star website reports.

Davao lies about 800km (500 miles) south-east of the capital Manila.

The fire comes as the country is coming to terms with a deadly tropical storm.

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.

Yup, word in Davao is the sprinkler system wasn't working properly, might just be rumour but might just be true. I have been in NCCC often, wasn't aware there was a call centre in the mall, sad times.

Yup, you know the saying, some countries are filled with natural resources, the Philippines is filled with natural disasters. Some ghouls there though, the charred body pics are already being passed around on facebook and phone

Yes... the ghastly stuff that some Filipinos think fit to post to Facebook, is often beyond the comprehension of their western-raised brethren.

Dutertes son the vice-mayor (nepotism is alive and well in pinas) of Davao has just resigned today citing his failed marriage, investigation in his alleged involvement in shabu smuggling etc as his reason for resigning people aren't happy saying its a ridiculous time to resign, and he is probably doing it so he doesn't have to be involved in any investigation into the fire, his weak character cant handle it.

Just be careful if you are in politics in Phils you will get the blame. Perhaps it's Duterte's fault that the fire escape doors were locked, he should have checked them before he announced his resignation. It doesn't matter how much good has been done it's only the bad things that make headlines. To some, I say just be careful what you wish for ... speak to the ones that live there especially in Mindanao where there is Martial law, the vast majority still believe in Duterte.

I did speak to people who live in Mindanao H. I did so today, quite a few in Davao. It's his son, not Duterte himself. The son who had the job on his father's and sister's coat-tails. They say his resignation is bad-timing with no prior warning because of what's happened. He isn't strong enough to head an investigation

Pinas really needs to get it together regarding fire safety and prevention. Fortunately everyone escaped unharmed in this instance.

I heard of someone who escaped the Davao NCCC fire, she praised God for getting her out
