Rio Ferdinand Breaks Down As He Reveals He Turned To Alcohol
Former England footballer Rio Ferdinand has opened up about his wife's death, saying the guilt he felt over her death made him turn to alcohol.
Rio was taking part in a BBC documentary, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum And Dad, which is being aired on Tuesday 28th March at 9pm on BBC One, when he broke down when talking about how he 'self-medicated' with alcohol to cope with the grief of losing his wife to breast cancer in 2015.
He is now a single parent to the couple's three children, Lorenz, 10, eight-year-old Tate and Tia, five.

I read about this the other day, but never being into football at all, i just skipped over it.
Yes it's a sad time when you lose a partner so young and then it's all down to you to try to bring the family up.
Just like divorce really to me, as it was down to me to bring my daughter and son up and just at the time my daughter was starting her periods, you soon learn very quick,

Yes, it most certainly IS ... I know only too well what it feels like, having lost my previous wife (the mother of my children) 10 months after she'd been diagnosed with Non~Hodgkins' Lymphoma.
Oh we'd been told it was incurable when all treatment options failed. Nonetheless ... ... I'd been totally unprepared for how rapidly the disease advanced towards the end.
Luckily [for me] I was 47 at the time, and our two kids had grown-up by then - unlike Rio Ferdinand's three.

Watch 'Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad'.
There follows, an excerpt from a programme being screened on BBC1 at 9 o'clock tomorrow night ... in which the former England captain discusses his grief - "I haven't moved on" - he candidly admits.

Statistically, ... it's estimated some 75 men under the age of 50 are widowed in the UK every day.
Without meaning to appear morbid ... I'd say this is a programme not to be missed.

It's a tuff life out there, no matter who you are.
Some can go on no matter what may happen, others sink.

My kids mum died 15 years ago,i didn't turn to drink or suchlike,i just had to get on with life, thats how it goes.
Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.
