    Storm Surge

These local pics may be of interest ( especially to members who have visited Scarborough, on England’s east coast ).

Today’s storm surge affected Scarborough around dusk, thankfully with no damage, as for the east coast generally. This is the site of the South Bay Pool, which closed nearly 30 years ago :-

    A few seconds later :-

Sandbags had been placed on the landward side of Scarborough’s Foreshore Road, with no traffic permitted. The 150 years old Grand Hotel survived ! :-

Fortunately the lifeboat has not been needed. The town had received its new £2m Shannon class lifeboat ( powered by water jets and not propellers ) at 13.15 hours ( RNLI number ) on 27 November last year :-

RNLI has developed a system capable of launching and recovering the lifeboat from the beach at any state of the tide, costing £1.5m :-

The huge amount of money, including the cost of a new lifeboat house, was paid for partly from local legacies and partly by donations direct to RNLI.

There have been many sea disasters off our east coast. Scarborough had its first lifeboat in 1801 ; it was not until 1924 that the town received its first motor lifeboat ( costing £3,691 ).

The last of our rowing lifeboats, the "Brothers Brickwood", cost £871. By the time she came to Scarborough in 1919, the town was no longer important as a commercial port, and most passing cargo ships were too far off shore for such a lifeboat to offer any help that might be needed. Her services were mainly to assist local fishing boats.
