The University of the Philippines Manila (U. P. Manila) is definitely the oldest among the list of seven important universities of the University of the Philippines System. It was founded in 1908, and remains to be a coeducational and a public research university. However three years prior to the founding of the university, the Philippine Medical School has already been founded in 1905. This would later be known as the university’s College of Medicine and today exists as the oldest degree-granting unit of U. P. Manila.

U. P. Manila’s College of Medicine is renowned as a leading research center in the health sciences in the Asia-Pacific region. It is the heart of the health sciences education in the country, and takes pride as an excellent school of tertiary learning in the health sciences, so that it is the recipient of the most number of college applications in the field of health sciences compared to any other college or university in the country. They also have established the National Health Sciences Center and supervises the administration of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), which is the country’s largest medical and national referral center for health.

The U. P. College of Medicine represents the very first Center of Excellence (COE) in Medical Education in the Philippines. In 2001, the Commission on Higher Education (ChEd) of the Philippines recognized two COEs in U. P. Manila: the first being the College of Medicine, and the other, the College of Nursing. Today, U. P’s College of Medicine stands strong as one of the five medical institutions acknowledged as the Centers of Excellence in Medical Education in the Philippines.

U. P. Manila offers nine degree-granting units; namely, the National Institutes of Health (the research arm ), the Philippine General Hospital (the training hospital and also a state tertiary referral hospital), and also academic and administrative support offices.

The college is branched out in the Ermita, Manila area and to three other provinces in the Philippines; namely, at Palo, Leyte, where the college is known as the UP School of Health Sciences ( because of the typhoon Yolanda, this college is now temporarily located at the UP Tacloban campus); at Baler, Aurora; and, at Koronadal, South Cotabato. The UP Ermita campus resides the following institutions: the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS); National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTC-HP); Office of the University Registrar (OUR); Philippine General Hospital (PGH); the Colleges of Dentistry (CD), Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), Nursing (CN), Public Health (CPH) and Medicine (CM); and, the UPM National Institutes of Health (UPM-NIH).

As the Philippine’s health sciences center, UP Manila spearheads in developing innovative programs and critical researches that address the country’s major health problems, as well as in performing local community services that will help reach different men and women and communities. UP Manila encourages associations and partners with the government, policy makers, along with other health organizations and specialized health groups to be able to effectively react to the country’s top priority health issues via its numerous services and programs.

UP Manila produces model programs that will establish the standards in the country’s health care and education. The fact is, the majority of the initial programs continue to be just offered by the University: the Integrated Arts and Medicine Program (a 7 yr medical program); Ms In Clinical Audiology Ma In Health Policy Studies Master Of Rehabilitation Science and the step-ladder curriculum of the Health Sciences. The latter now having three campuses: the main campus located at Palo, Leyte, and the other two campuses at Baler, Aurora and at South Koronal, Cotabato City.

UP Manila continues to strive for excellence in the field of research by also generating and sharing knowledge and technologies that aim to advance the quality of life of the Filipinos. Its research results have set the direction for the national health care problems and have been used as the standard for policy development and implementation. During the past six years, it has been the aim of the present director to offer even more encouraging facilities to progress research pursuits.

UP Manila’s present work is to reinforce its community service by offering an broadened Community Health and Development Program in San Juan, Batangas. This particular area also serves as a common field practicum site for students. In the meantime, even more programs are being worked to help establish UP Manila’s public serving role.
