Poor Me!
Ended up going to the dentist today after being plagued by recurring toothache for most of the past weekend. Turned out an *abscess had formed adjacent to one of my few remaining BIG back teeth ... *for which I was duly prescribed a short course of Amoxicillin 250 mg capsules to be taken 3 times daily spaced out ... over the next 7 days.
Having already gone through ... HELL? (That certainly!) But ... what I meant to say was - in spite of consuming a full 16-pack of Tesco's extra powerful painkillers since the onset of the problem late last Friday evening and starting my prescription - I'm still getting agonising twinges gnawing away while I sit here waiting impatiently for the antibiotics to "kick in" properly.
Ouch!

I feel your pain. I currently have an abscess and in 10 days time am going into hospital to have three wisdom teeth out and the abscess removed

I sympathise, Arthur, and wish you a full recovery with pain relief as soon as possible.
As I explained to Slip in a previous thread, the usual way to cure a dental abscess is by the dentist or dental surgeon cutting into it to drain away the pus ( fluid containing the bacteria / bugs ). Indeed, antibiotics may not always be needed for dental abscesses unless there are complications ( like local spread ). If they were needed, amoxicillin ( a type of penicillin ), as prescribed in your case, is appropriate.
Hopefully the antibiotics will “ kick in “, as you say, but presumably this is prior to your dentist / dental surgeon draining the abscess.
Get well soon !

Ah ... I'd been thinking about you and your "teething troubles" in the months leading up to your in the Philippines.
Brave man! Although, looking at yours and Harlene's happy smiling faces in the pre-nuptial photos, Slip ... I was reassured that you appeared to manage (for the most part, at least) to remain pretty clear of any recurring symptoms - thankfully!
All the best in getting the various problems fixed once and for all.

Thanks too, for your sympathy, Alan. Alas my dentist didn't offer to drain the abscess ... preferring instead to prescribe antibiotics - which, frankly, aren't helping a great deal to relieve the almost constant dull ache - when I wish to God he'd just yanked the tooth out in the first place. Indeed, the Amoxicillin capsules proved so ineffective that I was forced to walk 3/4 of a mile each way to the 24-hr Tesco store in order to replenish my stock of painkillers late last night. Oddly enough, doing this did bring a modicum of relief ... even if it was short-lived.

Get well soon sir Art.
Dave has got the same problem, they put filling on his tooth six months ago and realized it was no good and needs to be extracted in the end
I never stop contacting NHS 111 until the problem was resolved...He is now a happy bunny but not happy paying 50quid for it''Don't be serious..Be Sincere''

Thank you Mari to learn that Dave has had problems with his filling though. Sometimes extraction is the best remedy ... and I wish that course of action had been suggested for mine after the last occasion an abscess formed on the affected site.
Glad to read Dave's gotten rid of his pain and I'm happy to report that, for the first time in nearly a week, I woke up this morning without the horrible gnawing sensation.

I know how you feel my friend having had one 2 months back the pain is unbelievable.
I was also given amoxicillin 250mg which didn't touch it then increased to 500mg still agony so was drained by incision on the gum ouch but god what a relief.
I was then given metranizadole alongside the amoxcillin and a root canal to follow and after 3 visits to the dentist treatment was completed.
But one last thing I got was thrush down below due to the powerful effects of metranizadole lol, so damm sore and inflamed lol so no for a while... but in context I know how you feel.
Get well soon Arthur.....

Thank you, Mark ... it's been sheer torture!
Yes ... at one stage I was beginning to think I'd need to step up my dosage.
Hmm ... it hasn't come to that ... yet!
Poor Mark ... you really have been through the mill, !
... thanks again my friend, for your concern.

Hi, my friends ... I'm back at last,
Thank Christ the awful pain has passed
'twas so bad I could've grat
But knew there'd be no point in that
Alas it went on for several days
Wandering around in a drug~filled haze
Metronidazole combined with Paramol
Doped up, I was - right to the eyeball(s)
Come this Friday ... ... so I'm assured
T'misery I've suffered should be cured!

A dentist, young Doctor Malone,
Got a charming girl patient alone,
And in his depravity
He filled the wrong cavity
And my how his practice has grown!
