Lightbulb Sailors' brew: 10 best rums

Drink it on the straight up, over ice or mixed long or short. However you like your rum, try one of these special bottles........

    1. Brugal 1888

“It’s the butterscotch flavour that distinguishes this very special dark rum from the Dominican Republic,” says Agostino Perrone, director of Mixology at the Connaught Hotel. “It’s gentle at the beginning, with toasty and sweet notes to finish.”
    £48.95, harrods.com

    2. Wray & Nephew White Overproof

This is a bartenders’ favourite and the best-selling high-proof rum in the world, with 90 per cent of rum sales in Jamaica coming from this alone. You’ll find notes of banana and Demerara, as well as spice and a little oak. Be warned, it’s very potent.
    £25.50, tesco.com

    3. Diplomatico Vintage 2000

From Venezuela, this dark golden rum is distilled from molasses in a copper potstill before 12 years of ageing. “It’s very rich, sweet and fruity,” says Agostino, who recommends sipping this over ice or at room temperature.
    £49.99, selfridges.com

    4. The Kraken Black Spiced Rum

“This Victorian style, dark spiced rum is easy to mix or sip,” says Agostino. For mixing, he recommends coke, ginger beer or on the rocks with apple juice. Named after a colossal squid, which according to legend, took down a rum ship in the 18th century, it’s very dark with a strong kick.
    £23, ocado.com

    5. Plantation 3 Stars White Rum

“White rum, which can be aged or unaged, is the clear and most commonly used as the base for a daiquiri or mojito,” says Agostino. He picks this “vibrant and well-balanced” bottle which comes from the “three stars” of the Caribbean – Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.
    £27.99, selfridges.com

    6. Appleton Estate V/X

The Appleton Estate have been making rum since 1749, and this blend of 15 aged rums is something of a classic: scents of brown sugar and fruits with a hint of spice on the nose, silky smooth to drink, with a black pepper kick. Drink on the rocks or mixed with ginger beer.
    £19.35, thewhiskyexchange.com

    7. El Dorado 15 years old

“This vibrant, full bodied and complex flavoured sipping rum has aromas of Caribbean flavours ranging from fruity to spicy,” says Agostino. It’s won the accolade of the Best Rum in the World at the International Wine & Spirits Challenge for four years running – one sip and you’ll see why.
    £41.57, masterofmalt.com

    8. Ron Zacapa 23

Aged in the Guatemalan highlands, some 2,300m up, in casks previously used for bourbon and sherry, this blend of rums is distinctive on the palate. The fruity, chocolatey flavour with a delicate hint of spice is best enjoyed neat or over ice.
    £49.67, amazon.co.uk

    9. Chairman’s Reserve

This spicy and vanilla-infused blend comes from tropical St Lucia. A sip will transport you to white sands and blue waters. Aged for five years in Kentucky bourbon barrels, this is surprisingly sophisticated for a rum with this price tag.
    £22, waitrose.com

    10. Angostura 1919

This award-winning, golden-hued rum is a blend of white and dark sugar bases, aged for five years in sherry barrels. The result: a light, sweet rum that’s smooth and not too heavy, with notes of oak, cocoa and vanilla.
    £21.50, waitrose.com

The only one in that list I've actually sampled is #2. Wray & Nephew White Overproof. Plenty of local rum available during my stay in Jamaica.....dangerous stuff

I notice that my old favorite 'Captain Morgan's Original Spiced Rum' isn't featured.Wonderful stuff at 100 proof

Funnily I can't remember ever having sampled Tanduay despite having plenty of opportunity.
I'll try it out on my next trip to Philippines later this year.

Tanduay that's what my construction team like to drink on their time off,

I only ever tasted one dark rum years ago that was enough to put me off for life, so I never tried any other rums apart from bacardy white rum which is my favourite with a little coke,
I think though I am going to be trying out the tanduay soon

funny thing I bought a party pack of Bacardi today at gasano, 2x 750 ml and one free 350 ml,

    for 739 peso
