Ms Sale said that for pupils with English as a first language the extra lessons would be seen as a way improving the spelling and grammar.

She added: “The demands on the formality of language and the standards of spelling and grammar in GCSE exams are getting higher and higher. The level of language written and talked by the vast majority of our native English speakers would not be high enough to get A grades.”
's, Mrs S ... to my mind, there's a "crying need" for improvement in the areas I've emboldened - not just at the City of Leeds School, but in schools throughout the UK - as the present standards of spelling and grammar (including the use of Capital Letters where appropriate - notably involving peoples' names and the personal pronoun) in written English have declined abysmally in comparison to what was once taught during the 1950s and 60s ... and, even more significantly, since *text speak (so beloved by mobile phone users) first came on the scene.

    .............................. * Grrr ...!
