Enoch Powell 'maybe should have known better'
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Enoch Powell. One of the major figures of post-war British politics, he was brilliantly clever - reading Ancient Greek at the age of five, for instance, - but he was accused by his detractors of using that great intellect badly: giving cover to racism with his warnings about immigration.

A great man, and I'm happy to say it.
He was no Hitler or extremist, just a man who loved his country and his culture...a pragmatist who sought to 'nip in the bud' something that would ultimately develop into a monster.
I believe he will be proved right.

It may seem ironic people like us who have relationships with Filipinas airing such views, but it is the overall Laissez faire attitude to immigration in the past that is causing problems for us now.

I only need ...'un beer s'il vous plait', and 'voulez vous couche avec moi ce soir' ?
N'aime pas vraiment le savon-dodgers de toute façon.

If you read his biography, he was not a racist, and was a very intelligent man. He was also a man of his times, and if anything, his real mistake was to use the ancient government habit of "lying" and embellishing the truth, to score points about immigration - something which would turn into one of the great "must not says", but which he maybe didn't see the way this tide was turning.
The incident I relate to, was the supposed constituent of his who did not dare go out because of immigrants who had moved into that street.
He wouldn't name the constituent, but didn't think the media would then set out to painstakingly go through the electoral register and other sources to try track this constituent. No-one could be found who would fit the bill (older indigenous person in a street of many incomers). Yes it was probably an embellishment, and yes, Mr Powell made the speech just at the wrong time.
Racist though? Slander!

He was made out to be a pariah for going against the goverment at the time. The mass immigration to the uk was to fill the enormous labour shortage.
The Daily mail did a middle spread of his life and times a couple of days back. Worth a read if you got the time especially today..his birthday.

How do some members of this board feel about being part of the great British homeless hostel, now that these shoot in the foot policies have come home to roost ?

I am blaming ourselves, or rather our forefathers, who permitted MASS immigration.
Sorry, but I don't care how wonderful the Ugandan Asians are/were as a people.
They belong in in the Indian sub-continent.

I've said my piece and you may disagree with what I've said, but please don't make assumptions about any further views I may have or attempt to put words into my mouth.
That's how you lose my attention.

Ah, well, you raise an interesting point, there!
We would all say "yes", of course, but Chinese boys and girls are taught in school that they are quite different; the Chinese are not Africans like the rest of us but descend from Pekin Man and are therefore not just a superior race but a superior species!!

uncontrolled immigration is a problem, even the labour party have admitted they got it wrong.
1 million Polish came to the UK over a number of years, when the Labour gov estimated less than 25,000 would come, where they got that figure from who knows , but whats to stop the other 700,000,000 EU citizens coming here ? in theory nothing

I havd chatted to a couple of Chinese people online, the level of brainwashing is astounding. They say the same about us, of course.
I don't think immigration (with controls) is a problem, I think the lack of integration is a bigger problem.
Also the immigration bias towards Europe - why?

Slightly perhaps ... but - returning to the *subject of this thread - didn't *Enoch Powell also have HIS "darker" ('scuse pun) side ... as manifested in his somewhat callous, unsympathetic attitude towards the parents of children deformed by the thalidomide drug during his tenure as Minister of Health in the early 1960s?

Thank you! Yes ... I was a teenager at the time, but remember only too well, reading about the horrific consequences suffered by the thousands of women (and, by default, their offspring) who'd taken the drug - unaware of its effects. And Powell's *dismissive manner in dealing with its victims (*i.e., that people who took even aspirin were aware of the risks) shows up significant flaws in the man's character.

In labours eyes, they got nothing wrong...for every immigrant its a labour vote..stack um high and bugger the consequences..thats labours way
This immigration has been going on for centuries, for Goodness sakes...as was eloquently pointed out yesterday, we are all immigrants....interesting point about us Englishmen coming from Northern Germany though....one of my long gone uncles was told by a doctor decades ago that his family hailed from Viking stock due to all us men in the family, me included have and had carpal tunnel.
Im under the impression the mass immigration in the mid 50's and 60's was due to the labour shortages caused by the world wars. Either thst or the Brits were all busy getting university degrees thus, leaving a shortage of unskilled labour..who knows ...either way, the empire was in need of these industrious types to encamp here and pick the the nation up by the scruff of its neck and get it' moving again..which, in my opinion, it did

Discussing topics enthusiastically and with vigour is OK in my book, but please try to limit personal involvements.
